An unusual initiative to combat dengue fever has been launched in one of the largest cities in the Philippines – locals are being offered money for caught mosquitoes. For every five insects caught, residents can receive one peso (about two US cents), pravilamag.ru reports with reference to the BBC.

The reason for this decision was the increase in cases of dengue fever in the country, which has already led to the death of two students. Live mosquitoes and their larvae are destroyed using ultraviolet light.

According to Carlito Cernal, head of the village of Barangay Addition Hills in central Manila, the initiative has already yielded results – more than 20 people have received a reward for 700 caught insects.

Although the program has been ridiculed on social media, the Philippines’ Department of Health has praised the efforts of local authorities. The program complements other measures to combat dengue, including street cleaning and the elimination of water accumulation sites where mosquitoes lay eggs.
