Scientists from Drexel University and other American scientific institutions have found a link between the consumption of fish by pregnant women and a reduced risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in their children. The results of the study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, show that the inclusion of fish in the diet of expectant mothers can reduce the likelihood of autism in the child by about 20%, writes gazeta.ru.

In the study, researchers analyzed data from about 4000 participants, examining the relationship between fish consumption, supplement use, and autism-related neurological development. Information about the participants' diet was obtained from reports they provided.

Interestingly, even irregular fish consumption (less than once a week) during pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk of autism in the child. At the same time, the researchers found no significant effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on the risk of developing ASD.
