Starmer announced his retirement as British Prime Minister

Outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his retirement from the government, Sky News reports.

The politician announced his intention to visit King Charles III to formally announce his resignation. He noted that during his six-and-a-half years as leader of the Labour Party, he led it from its historic defeat in 2019 to victory in the 2024 elections.

Starmer called serving as prime minister an honor and declared that Britain had become stronger and fairer during his two years in office. Among his cabinet's achievements, he highlighted the reduction in child poverty, the reduction in immigration, the strengthening of the country's defense capability, and the growth of its international standing. He particularly praised the work of the military, doctors, and volunteers.

The outgoing prime minister called on Britons to stand united in the face of forces seeking to divide the country and stressed London's continued support for Ukraine.

Andy Burnham, formerly Mayor of Greater Manchester, will become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He was elected leader of the Labour Party, making his appointment as head of government a formality.
