Argentina defeated Egypt in the round of 1/8 of the 2026 World Cup

The Argentina national football team defeated Egypt in the round of 1/8 match of the 2026 World Cup, which is being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The match took place in Atlanta and ended 3–2 in favor of the South American team. Scoring for Argentina were Cristian Romero (79th minute), Lionel Messi (83rd)—who had missed a penalty in the 21st minute—and Enzo Fernández (90+2). Yasser Ibrahim (15th) and Mostafa Zico (67th) scored for Egypt.

Messi became the first player in history to score in six consecutive World Cup knockout-stage matches. In the current tournament, the 39-year-old "Inter Miami" forward leads the goalscoring chart with eight goals. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner also provided an assist to Romero and, with nine assists to his name, is now the all-time assist leader in World Cup history.

In doing so, Messi failed to convert his fourth penalty at World Cups (excluding shootouts), the worst record in the tournament's history. He also became the first player to miss two penalties at a single World Cup.

The Argentina national team is the reigning world champion, having won the tournament three times in total (1978, 1986, 2022). The Egyptians advanced past the group stage for the first time at this tournament; previously, they had played in the round of 1/8 at the 1934 World Cup, which did not feature a group stage.
