Ashgabat honored the memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War

A memorial ceremony commemorating the 85th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 took place in the Turkmen capital. The event took place on the "Alley of Memory" outside the Russian Embassy in Turkmenistan.

The ceremony was attended by members of the Russian diplomatic mission, as well as the heads of the diplomatic missions of Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Among those present were clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church, students of the A.S. Pushkin Russian-Turkmen School, their parents, and volunteers from the public organization "Ýeňme."

Participants laid flowers and observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims. Priest Alexei Mikhailov, rector of the Church of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky, performed the funeral litany.

"Today we remember a tragic chapter of our shared history, which divided time into before and after," the priest said.

Russian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Ivan Volynkin called for preserving historical memory and passing it on to future generations. "Many are now trying to rewrite history to suit their own agenda. But we know the truth—and our task is to ensure that such a thing never happens again," the diplomat said.

Volynkin also drew attention to the fate of veterans. "Every year, there are fewer and fewer of them. We must take care of the people who gave us life," he added.
