Turkmenistan and Uganda considered introducing a visa-free regime for diplomatic passports

Turkmenistan and Uganda held high-level talks, following which the parties confirmed their readiness to transform diplomatic relations into practical economic partnership.

The meeting took place in Kampala during the Turkmen delegation's visit to the Ugandan capital. The Turkmen side was represented by Yazkuli Mammedov, Head of the Middle East and Africa Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The Ugandan side was led by Ambassador Leonard Mugerwa; organizational support for the meeting was provided by Twaha Matata, Chargé d'Affaires of the Ugandan Embassy in Tehran, also accredited to Turkmenistan, nilepost.co.ug reports.

During the talks, the parties identified priority areas for cooperation: trade and investment, energy, textile and agricultural sectors, education, tourism, and cultural exchange. Turkmenistan highlighted its potential in natural gas exports and textile production, including denim and export-oriented fabrics. Uganda highlighted opportunities in poultry supplies, food processing, and coffee production.

Academic cooperation received special attention: the parties discussed student exchange programs, collaboration between universities and diplomatic academies, and joint initiatives to train personnel in diplomacy and international relations. To facilitate business contacts, business forums and trade fairs are planned with the participation of private sector representatives from both countries.

The parties also considered the possibility of introducing a visa-free regime for holders of diplomatic and service passports to facilitate official travel. Furthermore, they discussed prospects for cooperation within international organizations, including the UN, as well as the coordination of diplomatic initiatives and state visits.

Participants assessed the meeting as reflecting the growing momentum in bilateral relations between the two countries. Further contacts and the conclusion of new agreements are expected through 2027.
