With the arrival of September, many people experience an inexplicable sadness. What causes this autumnal despondency?

According to Dr. David Rozmarin, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and founder of the Anxiety Center, the surge in sadness at the beginning of autumn is a normal phenomenon known as “autumn anxiety” or “autumn blues”.

The main reason for this state is the discrepancy between expectations and reality. At the beginning of summer, we make grandiose plans, dream of travel and achievements. When autumn comes, we realize that many of these plans remain unrealized. Those who were unable to take a vacation in the summer feel especially keenly the missed opportunities. The feeling that “the whole wonderful season has passed us by” gives rise to anxiety and despondency.

How to overcome the autumn blues?

Psychologists recommend practicing conscious waiting. Think of September as a time for new beginnings. Make plans for autumn that are no less vibrant than those of summer. Update your wardrobe with autumn items. Resume your usual hobbies, fitness workouts, and cozy rituals that make you happy at any time of year.
