On November 27, a test train collided with construction workers at the Kunming-Luoyang railway station in China. Eleven people were killed and two were injured, both of whom are hospitalized.
According to local news outlets Sina and Xinhua, the train, which was testing earthquake detection equipment, was traveling at 114 km/h when it crashed into workers on a curved section of track at Luoyang Town Station near the southwestern city of Kunming.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the workers were carrying out scheduled rail replacement on the station's main tracks and switches. According to the official version, they entered the tracks prematurely, without waiting for official orders to begin repairs.
Following the incident, the railway administration activated its emergency response plan and, in conjunction with local authorities, organized rescue operations. Normal service has already been restored at the station. The circumstances of the accident remain under investigation.
This is the worst rail accident in China in over a decade. Previous significant rail incidents occurred in 2011 in Zhejiang Province, where 40 people died, and in 2021 in Gansu province, where 10 people died.
