Turkmen tennis players won a convincing 3-0 victory over the Brunei team in the first match of the Davis Cup zonal tournament, reports Golden Age.
The competition is taking place in Isa Town, Bahrain. The Turkmenistan team is competing in group V of the Asia-Oceania zone, where 14 teams are divided into four subgroups and vying for promotion.
In the first singles match, Selim Chagylov defeated Gavin Yeung Kok Lim 6-0, 6-0 in 54 minutes. In the second singles match, Allanur Dayanjov defeated Ayman Abdullah 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-1 in a three-set match that lasted 1 hour and 55 minutes. In doubles, Meylis Orazmuhamedov and Yuri Rogusskiy defeated the duo of Gavin Yeung Kok Lim and Ak Ahmad Dasuki PG Haji Sulaiman 6-0, 6-0 in 38 minutes.
Turkmenistan is playing in group C alongside Bahrain, Bangladesh, and Brunei. Turkmenistan's next opponent will be Bangladesh, which lost to Bahrain 3-0.
The winners of the four groups will advance to the playoffs. The two playoff winners will qualify for group IV of the Asia-Oceania Zone next year.
The Turkmenistan national team is represented by Yuri Rogusskiy, Meylis Orazmukhamedov, Selim Chagylov, Ali Geldiyev, and Allanur Dayanjov. Team captain is Mirali Gasanov, coach is Gurbanberdi Gurbandiyev, and the head of the delegation is Eziz Dovletov, Chairman of the Turkmenistan Tennis Federation.
Turkmen tennis players have been participating in the Davis Cup since 2004. The team achieved its best result in 2015, reaching the playoffs of the Asia-Oceania Zone Group III tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
