A new bridge spanning the Huajiang Gorge has opened in Guizhou Province in southwest China. It is the highest bridge in the world. According to Xinhua News Agency, the structure rises 625 meters above the Beipan River.
The new bridge is almost nine times the height of San Francisco's famous Golden Gate Bridge. Construction took three years. The total length of the structure is 2,890 meters, with the main span reaching 1420 meters.
Local authorities note that this is the largest steel truss suspension bridge built in a mountainous area. Before this new structure, the record was held by another bridge over the Beipan River, located approximately 100 kilometers away. Its height was 565.4 meters.
The construction of the new bridge has significantly reduced the travel time across the gorge: while the journey previously took about two hours, it can now be completed in two minutes.
Guizhou Province is known as the "Land of Bridges," boasting over 30 thousand such structures. Three of the province's bridges hold top positions in the world's tallest bridge rankings, and nearly half of the world's 100 largest bridges are located in Guizhou.
