For the first time in world history, the level of obesity among children and adolescents 5-19 years old exceeded the prevalence of insufficient weight, according to the UN children's fund (UNICEF). According to the report “Food for profit”, in 2025, the share of children with obesity reached 9,4 %, while an indicator of insufficient weight was 9,2 %.
According to UNICEF, an increase in the number of cases of excess weight is recorded in all regions of the planet. The greatest prevalence is observed in Latin America, Caribbean countries, in the Middle East, North Africa and North America.
Since the beginning of the XXI century, the number of children and adolescents with overweight has doubled - from 194 million to 391 million people. Experts note that the problem spreads at the fastest pace in countries with low and average income.
