Alp Arslan Begenjov started with a victory at the Asian Games in Japan

Turkmen freestyle wrestler Alp Arslan Begenjov made a successful start at the XX Summer Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, winning his opening bout in the under-86 kg weight category.

In the Round of 16, held on October 2 at the Nagoya City Inae Sports Center, the 20-year-old athlete faced China's Hade Ayidusi. Begenjov won on points with a score of 5–1.

Following this match, the Turkmen wrestler advanced to the tournament quarterfinals, where he will face Mongolia's Suldkhuu Olonbayar.

International-class Master of Sports Alp Arslan Begenjov is considered Turkmenistan's top prospect in freestyle wrestling for the new Olympic cycle. At the 2024 U20 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, he won Turkmenistan's first-ever gold medal in this Olympic sport at a competition of such high caliber. In 2025, he reached the quarterfinals at a similar tournament in Samokov, Bulgaria. And just recently, at the World Junior Championships (U20) held in Bratislava, Begenjov won a bronze medal in the under-86 kg weight category.

The XX Summer Asian Games are taking place in Nagoya from September 19 to October 4. Turkmenistan’s delegation consists of 57 people, including 34 athletes competing in eight sports.
