Apple is preparing a feature called iPhone Handoff for iOS 27 that will allow users to switch between two iPhones while maintaining the same phone number. The innovation was first announced at the WWDC 2026 presentation in June – it was mentioned in a slide with a list of more than 250 changes in iOS 27, but Apple did not disclose details at that time.

MacRumors forum member pdfu posted a video demonstrating the feature's operation on two simulated iPhones running in the Device Hub of Xcode 27.

iPhone Handoff is set up in the "Settings" app, under "Cellular." During this process, the user specifies which of the two iPhones will be the primary device for everyday use, and which will be the secondary device.

According to Apple, the primary eSIM remains on the primary iPhone, and the secondary device receives an additional eSIM, which allows switching between devices without changing the phone number. All cellular settings are controlled from the primary iPhone, and geolocation is determined by the device that is currently actively using the number.

In addition to having two iPhones running iOS 27, carrier support is required for this feature to work. According to a forum post, T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany are among the first carriers to offer this feature.

The release of iOS 27 is expected at the end of this month, after three months of beta testing. Apple may release more details about the iPhone Handoff feature soon.
