New school year in Turkmenistan: "Preparing for school – time to pay attention to your child's well-being"

School readiness is much more than new notebooks, a uniform, and a neatly packed schoolbag. It's a state in which a child is physically rested, well-nourished, sufficiently active, able to manage their time, and knows they are understood and supported at home. Preparing for school is a good time to pay attention to a child's overall well-being. This topic was raised in the “Neutral Turkmenistan” newspaper by Agayunus Myradova, a lecturer in the Department of Nutrition Hygiene at Myrat Garryev State Medical University.

Parents should discuss concerns with a healthcare professional, especially if their child is frequently tired, complains of headaches, has difficulty sleeping, or is noticeably struggling with physical or academic stress.

It's important to pay attention to vision, dental health, posture, and physical activity, the specialist advises. Here are some tips for parents.

  • Don't turn preparing for school into stress. It's important for your child to feel that the start of the school year isn't a punishment, but a new stage in their development.

  • Prepare together, let your child participate in choosing school supplies, organizing the workspace, and creating a routine.

  • Maintain an interest in learning. An interesting conversation, a book, observing nature, or solving a problem together can sometimes be more rewarding than hours of study.

  • Praise the effort, not just the result, as this helps build persistence and self-confidence.

  • Teach independence, because the child must gradually learn to pack a school bag, keep track of his things, do homework, and manage his time.

  • Don't forget about rest; a schoolchild should have time left for playing, socializing, walking, and doing their favorite activities.

  • Be a role model for your child. A healthy lifestyle, moderate use of gadgets, proper nutrition, and physical activity are much easier for children to embrace if they see them in their daily family life.

The most important thing to remember is that a successful student isn't someone who only gets excellent grades, but rather a child who maintains health, curiosity, self-confidence, and a desire to learn. And the foundation for this is laid, first and foremost, in the family.
