Nearly 3 million Tesla vehicles are being recalled in China due to hidden door handles

A major vehicle recall has begun in China due to safety issues with hidden door handles. In total, it affects over 4 million vehicles from various manufacturers, including 2,98 million Chinese-made Teslas.

In addition to Tesla, Chinese automakers XPeng, Xiaomi, and Geely are participating in the campaign. The reason for the campaign was concerns that retractable door handles built into cars could be difficult to detect and use in emergency situations.

Tesla announced a recall for some Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles. The company plans to install warning stickers and release a software update that will automatically lower the windows after a serious collision.

The safety of hidden door handles is also being discussed following several accidents in China. Chinese authorities previously announced new vehicle design requirements: starting January 1, 2027, cars sold in the country must have a mechanical door opening mechanism from both the outside and inside.

There is no word yet on whether Tesla and other manufacturers outside China will carry out a similar recall.
