The most popular presidential candidate in Hungary is the hero of a famous meme

Retired Hungarian electrical engineer András Arato, known for his "Hide the Pain Harold" meme, has topped the list of most popular candidates for the Hungarian presidency in an online poll, according to the British newspaper The Guardian.

In addition to Arato, other famous Hungarians also received high support in the survey: Nobel Prize winner in chemistry Katalin Karikó, the inventor of the Rubik's Cube Ernő Rubik, and model Barbara Palvin.

The question of new presidential elections in Hungary arose after Prime Minister Péter Magyar's cabinet introduced a bill to parliament on July 4, 2026, amending the Constitution, which would remove the incumbent president from office. The initiative was explained as a need to "restore trust in the institution of the head of state." On July 13, the amendment was supported by members of parliament, in which Magyar holds a majority.

On July 20, 2026, Tamás Šujok, who had served as president since March 2024, handed over his powers to Speaker of Parliament Ágnes Forsthoffer. She will serve as acting head of state until a new presidential election is held.
