The US is considering introducing a 100 thousand USD bail requirement for green card applicants — WSJ

US authorities are considering introducing a 100 thousand USD cash bail for some green card applicants, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources.

According to the publication, the bail amount may vary depending on the specific case—it may be either higher or lower than the stated amount.

The innovation is planned to be tested on "some" applicants from a small number of countries. The publication does not specify which countries or categories of applicants are being referred to.

As the WSJ notes, the deposit is intended to serve as a financial guarantee in the event that the green card holder is unable to support themselves after moving to the United States. The deposit can only be returned after obtaining U.S. citizenship, a process that takes at least five years.

A green card is an identity document that confirms a foreign citizen's right to permanent residence in the United States and allows them to work in the country.
