The Spanish national team defeated Portugal in the 2026 World Cup Round of 1/8 match

The Spanish national football team defeated Portugal 1–0 in the round of 1/8 of the 2026 World Cup—hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada—advancing to the tournament's quarter-finals. The match marked the final World Cup appearance for 41-year-old Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

The only goal was scored in the first minute of stoppage time at the end of regulation by Spain midfielder Mikel Merino.

According to the press service of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez announced his resignation after the match. The coach noted that the team had competed on equal terms with one of the World Cup favorites, but luck was not on the Portuguese side.

The Spanish national team has set a unique record by not conceding a single goal in six consecutive World Cup matches—a streak dating back to the round of 1/8 of the 2022 tournament. In the quarterfinals, Spain will face the winner of the match between the USA and Belgium.

Ronaldo has scored 3 goals in 5 matches during the current tournament, bringing his total to 11 goals across six World Cups.

The 2026 World Cup will conclude on July 19.
