"Father of the Internet" Vint Cerf is retiring from Google

Vinton Cerf, the renowned American scientist and one of the creators of the modern Internet, will conclude his work at Google next week, marking the end of one of the most influential careers in the history of digital technology.

According to AZERTAC, citing the tech publication TechCrunch, 83-year-old Vinton Cerf—along with Robert Kahn—is credited with developing the TCP/IP network protocols that became the foundation of the modern Internet. The work of scientists that began in the 1970s laid the foundation for the global network as it exists today. Since 2005, Cerf has held the position of Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google.

Shortly before retiring, the scientist participated in the Open Frontier conference organized by the Laude Institute. During the discussion, leading experts addressed the need to develop open standards and open infrastructure for artificial intelligence systems.

One of the event's key themes was the concentration of advanced artificial intelligence models in the hands of a limited number of large companies—a trend that participants felt runs counter to the principles of an open and decentralized internet established during the creation of TCP/IP.

According to Vint Cerf, the widespread adoption of AI agents will drive technology companies to return to open protocols. He noted that natural language interaction between large language models alone would not suffice; the reliable operation of such systems will require unified formal standards—otherwise, information exchange could devolve into a game of "telephone."
