Thailand has banned the use of power banks on board planes

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has introduced new regulations for the carriage and use of portable chargers on board aircraft, the Bangkok Post reports.

According to the updated requirements, power banks are permitted only in carry-on baggage; they are prohibited from being checked in. The capacity of the devices must not exceed 100 Wh; for batteries with a capacity of up to 160 Wh, prior approval from the airline is required. Each passenger is allowed to carry no more than two such devices.

The use of power banks during the flight is prohibited: charging phones and other gadgets from portable batteries, as well as charging the batteries themselves on board, is prohibited. Furthermore, devices cannot be stored in overhead bins; they must be easily accessible, such as in a seat pocket or under the seat.

The tightening of requirements follows a series of incidents involving power banks catching fire on board aircraft. Similar measures were previously adopted in Japan, where the use of such devices on aircraft was banned in April 2026.
