Turkmenistan celebrates the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War

On May 9, Turkmenistan, along with many countries around the world, celebrates Victory Day—the 81st anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945. Commemorative and celebratory events are taking place in the capital and throughout the country.

A flower-laying ceremony is underway at the Halk Hakydasy (People's Memory) memorial complex in Ashgabat. Representatives of government agencies, veterans' organizations, the diplomatic corps, and even citizens are attending, holding fresh flowers. Similar ceremonies are taking place at this time in all regions of the country: residents of cities and district centers gather at war monuments and memorials to honor the memory of their compatriots who did not return from the war.

Festive assemblies were held in public schools across the country. Teachers and students recalled the history of the war, in which the Turkmen people lost thousands of their sons and daughters.

In Ashgabat, a "Immortal Regiment" march took place at a joint Turkmen-Russian school. Children and adults marched with portraits of relatives—soldiers and officers who took part in that war—thus preserving the living connection between generations.

On this day, law enforcement officers serve in full dress uniform.

In the evening, the capital will host festive concerts featuring the republic's artistic groups.

Victory Day is a national holiday in Turkmenistan. The country honors the memory of more than 300 thousand citizens who served in the front during World War II.
