Turkmenistan is studying the possibility of joining the 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This was announced by Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov at a government meeting, the State News Agency of Turkmenistan reports.
A number of proposals to strengthen partnership with international organizations in the field of security were submitted to the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov for consideration. In particular, it is proposed to conduct work on studying the issue of joining the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which entered into force in 2021. 94 states have already joined the document.
Meredov stressed that Turkmenistan consistently supports international initiatives to ensure security. The country joined the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 1994, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in 1998, and the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia in 2006.
Also under consideration is the holding in Turkmenistan in 2026 of a regional seminar for National Information Centres of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) with the participation of coordinators from Central Asian and Caucasian countries.
In addition, issues of improving the work of the seismological station of the International Monitoring System of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty located in Turkmenistan and strengthening cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were discussed.
