A rare necklace that likely belonged to a Titanic passenger has been recovered from the Atlantic Ocean near the legendary liner's wreckage, The Daily Mail reports. The black glass piece had lain 3.8 km (2.4 miles) below the surface for over a century, surviving the disaster, the destructive sea conditions and time.

The necklace was found in fragments between the remains of the front and back of the ship. It had to be carefully extracted from the hard sediment layer formed under high pressure. After reconstruction, it became clear that the decoration consists of black glass beads in the shape of hearts and octagons, typical of the fashion of the early 20th century. Researchers note that such items were especially popular in 1912, when jewelry made of French jet - black glass prized in the Victorian era - was in fashion.

The identity of the owner could not be established - it is possible that he died in the crash. However, scientists do not rule out that the necklace could have belonged to a surviving passenger and was lost in the panic on board.
