Medical education on the way of progress

Turkmen State Medical Institute was established in 1931. On August 27, 2010  by the Order of the President of Turkmenistan the Institute was transformed into the State Medical University of Turkmenistan; since June 2019, the University  is named after Myrat Garryyev.

Being the only medical higher educational establishment in the Independent and Neutral Turkmenistan, Myrat Garryyev State Medical University of Turkmenistan is training highly professional specialists in all medical spheres for the system of health and medical industry of the country.

At present, students study in a new educational complex corresponding to the world standards and which was solemnly put into operation on September1, 2010 on the Day of Knowledge and Student Youth with the participation of the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairmen of the People's Council of Turkmenistan. All conditions necessary for teaching students, carrying out scientific investigations and propaganda of a healthy life style of the youth have been created in this new educational complex

After the foundation of the University, such new faculties, new specialties and clinical hospitals have been established. Among them are the Faculty of Sport Medicine and Eye Diseases Scientific-clinical  Centre (2011), the Faculties of Military Medicine and Doctors’ Post-diploma and Further Training  (2012), Stomatology  Production-and-training Centre (2013); specialty : Rehabilitation and Alternative Medicine with thin the Medical and Preventive Treatment Faculty (2014), specialty Sanitary-and-Epidemiologic Work within the Faculty of Military Medicine and Educational-and-scientific Centre for Maternal and Child’s Health Protection Centre (2015), specialty Medical-and-Social Work within the Medical and Preventive Treatment Faculty  (2018) and  Rehabilitation and Sport Medicine Faculty (2021).

  At present, the structure of the University includes 8 faculties and 57 departments, Eye Diseases Scientific-clinical Centre, Stomatology  Production-and-training Centre, Educational-and-scientific Maternal and Child’s Health Protection Centre, Scientific-research Centre, centres of biotechnology, sport medicine, information-computer centre, student’s sport club, electronic library, educational and educational-methodological centres, and post-graduate course department. 

Taking into consideration the fact that training of students at the University corresponds to the world requirements, in 2011, the University was issued the European Quality international award by the European Business Assembly International Organisation.

The University takes an active part in the realization of the concept of the uninterrupted vocational education by training and retraining of the staff at the Doctors’ Post-diploma and Further Training Faculty. About3, 000 doctors are annually taught by the programmes of the higher and additional vocational education.
