Rivers are not just water streams flowing across the surface of the Earth. These are living arteries that feed our planet, create unique landscapes and are home to countless living creatures.

The Amazon is the deepest river in the world. No river can compare with the Amazon in terms of the amount of water it carries in its waters. Its water reserve is greater than that of the seven rivers next to it in this ranking combined.

For many years, the Nile was considered the longest river in the world, stretching 6 650 km, leaving the Amazon (with its 6 400 km) in second place.

However, in recent years, controversy has erupted over the exact length of the Amazon. In 2007 and 2008, Brazilian and Peruvian researchers conducted a series of expeditions that led to new measurements: 6 992 km - Amazon, 6 853 km - Nile.

In 2009, an article was published claiming that the Nile is still longer – 7 088 km, versus 6 575 km of the Amazon. These data were obtained using satellite imagery and ground surveys.

Despite all these studies, the question of which river is the longest remains open. The dispute continues, and new expeditions may lead to even more accurate measurements.

The Piana River, known as the most winding river in the world, flows in the Nizhny Novgorod region. With a total length of about 400 kilometers, the distance from its source to its mouth in a straight line is only 30 kilometers.

The Mekong River, known for its mystical legends, is fraught with another mystery - fireballs. Every year, during the rainy season, luminous spheres burst from the depths of the river, rushing into the sky. This inexplicable phenomenon excites the minds of people and attracts the attention of tourists from all over the world to the Mekong.

The Ural River is interesting because one of its banks is in Asia, and the other in Europe.

At the mouth of the Catatumbo River, located in Venezuela, a real light show is happening. This place on Earth is known as the “Maracaibo Lighthouse” or “The Ever-Raging Thunderstorm”. Up to 450 000 lightning strikes are recorded at the river mouth each year.

The Royal River in Australia and the Hudson in the USA are the most polluted rivers in the world.

Irtysh (Russia) is the cleanest river.

The Nile is the oldest river, flowing mainly through Egypt. It has been flowing through Africa for 30 million years.

The Rio Negro Bridge is the only “bridge” across the almost 7 000-kilometer Amazon. Completed in 2010, it connected Manaus, the largest port on the river, with the city of Iranduba. The 3 595-meter bridge is not just a transport artery, but also a symbol of engineering and human desire to conquer nature.

Every year, rivers carry 16 billion tons of earth and stones into the seas and oceans.

There is a dark page in the history of the Cuyahoga River in the United States: at least 12 times it fell victim to the elements of fire. It was not the river itself that was burning, but the debris accumulated on its surface.

There are 17 countries on the planet that do not have rivers. For example, Saudi Arabia.

The height of waves in the Amazon can reach four meters.

It’s not for nothing that the Congo holds the title of the deepest river on the planet. In some places its depth reaches 250 meters.

Incredible, but true - the “underground Amazon” flows at a depth of 4 kilometers underground. This gigantic river, paradoxically, follows the route of its terrestrial namesake, but is hundreds of times wider!

The Kosi River in India is known for its fickle temperament. Every spring it creates a new channel for itself.

La Plata is the widest river in the world. In some places its width reaches 220 kilometers.

About 2,8 million rivers flow through Russia, which is more than in any other country in the world.
