Rahmi Karademir, a 67-year-old resident of Konya, Türkiye, surprised doctors with an unusual post-operative complication. After knee surgery and subsequent blockage of a cerebral artery, the man lost the ability to speak his native Turkish and began to communicate exclusively in Danish. This was reported by snob.ru with reference to Anadolu.

The operation was performed last week. Two days later, the patient developed serious complications – paralysis of the right limbs and loss of speech. A medical examination revealed thrombosis of a large cerebral artery. After the clot was removed, Karademir’s physical condition improved, but something unexpected happened: he could only speak Danish, completely losing the ability to speak Turkish.

Dr. Gökhan Özdemir from Selçuk University explained that such phenomena, although extremely rare, are known in medical practice. After a stroke or thrombosis, patients sometimes forget one of the languages or begin to use one that they have not used for a long time in everyday life.

Rahmi Karademir spent about 20 years in Denmark before returning to Türkiye ten years ago. The patient himself, through an interpreter, reported that he understands Turkish, but cannot pronounce a word in this language. Doctors predict that his native speech may be restored in the near future.
